Packet loss occurs when some ICMP packets sent during a ping test do not receive responses. This is expressed as a percentage. Zero percent packet loss indicates a reliable connection. Any packet loss can cause problems in applications like VoIP calls, online gaming, and video streaming. Even one to two percent packet loss can noticeably degrade real-time communication quality.

Common Uses for Ping Testing

Network professionals use ping for many diagnostic purposes. Troubleshooting internet connectivity issues by pinging well-known servers like 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS) helps isolate whether problems are local or external. Server administrators ping their servers from external locations to verify availability. Game server operators test latency to ensure players will have acceptable ping times. Developers use ping to verify that newly deployed servers are network-accessible. Remote workers ping their VPN servers and work resources to diagnose remote access problems.

Why Some Servers Do Not Respond to Ping

Not all servers respond to ping requests. Many systems are configured with firewall rules that block ICMP Echo Requests for security reasons. A server may be completely operational and serving web traffic while appearing non-responsive to ping. This is a normal security configuration and does not indicate the server is offline. Use HTTP-based checking tools to verify whether a web server is responding despite not responding to ICMP pings.
